    Itinerary

Day 1Leaving Marrakech Behind – Across the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate

Your 5 days tour from Marrakech to Fes begins in the morning with a pickup from your accommodation or Marrakech airport. Once we leave the red city behind, the scenery quickly begins to change.

The road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains, taking you through small Berber villages and dramatic mountain landscapes. We will make several stops along the way so you can enjoy the views, take photographs, and experience the contrast between Marrakech and the mountain communities.

We continue across the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Morocco. Rather than rushing through the journey, the route gives you time to appreciate the landscape and discover the small details of everyday life in the Atlas region.

Our next stop is the historic Telouat area before continuing toward one of Morocco’s most recognizable landmarks, Ait Ben Haddou.

Walking through the narrow passages of this ancient fortified village feels like stepping into another era. The earthen buildings, old houses, and views across the surrounding landscape explain why Ait Ben Haddou has attracted filmmakers from around the world. The location has featured in productions such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

After exploring the kasbah, we continue toward Ouarzazate, often known as the gateway to the Sahara. Here, you will settle into your accommodation, enjoy dinner, and relax after a day filled with mountains and history.

    Overnight: Ouarzazate
    Driving time: Approximately 4 hours

Day 2From Ouarzazate to the Palm Oases, Rose Valley & Dades Canyon

After breakfast, the second day of your Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins with more discoveries around Ouarzazate.

Depending on your interests, the morning can include a visit to the famous Atlas Film Studios, where Morocco’s landscapes have been transformed into settings for major international productions. You can also explore Taourirt Kasbah, an impressive example of southern Moroccan architecture.

Leaving Ouarzazate behind, we travel toward Skoura, a peaceful oasis surrounded by palm trees and traditional mud-brick architecture. One of the highlights here is Amridil Kasbah, a beautifully preserved historic kasbah that offers a glimpse into the lifestyle and craftsmanship of southern Morocco.

As we leave Skoura behind, the road leads us into the enchanting Rose Valley, where traditional villages and fragrant rose gardens shape the landscape. In spring, especially around the annual rose harvest, the valley becomes closely connected with the production of rose water, oils, perfumes, and other local products. You may have the opportunity to see how some of these traditional products are prepared.

By afternoon, we reach the Dades Valley. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as red cliffs rise around the road. We make our way toward the famous rock formations often called the “Monkey Fingers” before stopping at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley.

As the sun begins to disappear behind the mountains, you will arrive at your hotel for dinner and a peaceful evening in the Dades Valley.

Overnight: Dades Valley / Boumalne Dades
    Driving time: Approximately 3–4 hours

Day 3From Dades to the Todra Cliffs and the Golden Dunes of Merzouga

Today is when the landscape starts to feel truly different.

After breakfast, we leave the Dades Valley and head toward the Todra Gorges. Along the way, the road passes through villages, palm groves, and stretches of the beautiful southeastern Moroccan countryside.

At Todra Gorges, we stop to walk between the enormous limestone cliffs. The narrow canyon and towering rock walls make this one of the most impressive natural landscapes on the route. There is time to explore on foot, take photographs, and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Afterward, we continue through the palm-filled areas around Tinghir and Tinjdad before reaching Erfoud, a town well known for its fossils and geological discoveries.

The final part of the journey takes us toward Merzouga.

Gradually, the rocky landscape gives way to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. This is the moment many travelers have been waiting for. You will meet your camel team and begin crossing the dunes as the afternoon light changes the color of the Sahara.

At the top of a dune, we stop to watch the sunset. With the desert stretching in every direction, the silence makes this moment especially memorable.

With the last golden light fading from the dunes, we continue toward your Sahara camp, where a traditional dinner, music, and a night beneath the stars await. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, listen to Berber music around the campfire, and look up at the stars far away from the lights of the cities.

    Overnight: Desert camp in Merzouga
    Driving time: Approximately 5 hours

Day 4Beyond the Dunes – Nomadic Life, Khamlia & the Heart of Erg Chebbi

Wake up early today because the Sahara has one more surprise waiting for you: sunrise over the dunes.

Watching the first light move across Erg Chebbi is one of the unforgettable moments of this 5 day Morocco desert tour. After a peaceful breakfast in the desert, head back to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, where your private driver awaits for another day of discovery.

Instead of simply passing through Merzouga, today is dedicated to discovering the people and landscapes around the desert.

We travel off-road toward an old mining area before visiting a nomadic family living in the region. Sitting inside their traditional tent, sharing a glass of Moroccan tea, and hearing about their daily life gives you a different perspective on the Sahara beyond the dunes.

We then continue to Khamlia, a small village famous for its Gnaoua music. The rhythms have deep African roots, and a local performance offers an authentic cultural experience that is very different from the sightseeing stops earlier in the journey.

After lunch, the route continues through desert oases and palm groves. We may also visit the seasonal Merzouga lake, where birds can sometimes be seen depending on the water level and season.

The afternoon is intentionally relaxed. After several days on the road, you have time to enjoy the desert surroundings before spending another evening in the Merzouga area.

Overnight: Merzouga hotel / desert accommodation
    Driving time: Approximately 2 hours

Day 5Leaving the Sahara Behind – From Merzouga Through the Atlas to Fes

Your final morning begins with the last views of the Sahara before heading north toward Fes.

After breakfast, we leave Merzouga and travel toward Rissani, one of the historic centers of the Tafilalet region. If the timing is right, you can explore its lively traditional market and see local traders, food stalls, and everyday Moroccan life.

From Rissani, we continue toward Erfoud, where you can learn more about the region’s famous fossils and see local artisans working with fossilized stone and marble.

The journey then follows the dramatic landscapes around the Ziz Valley. We stop at a viewpoint where the valley opens beneath you, revealing a striking combination of palm trees, cliffs, and desert terrain.

We continue north toward Midelt, where you have time for lunch before entering a completely different environment.

The landscape becomes greener as we approach the Middle Atlas Mountains and the cedar forests. The forest is home to Barbary macaques, and you may have the chance to see them among the trees.

Our final stop before Fes is Ifrane, a mountain town known for its European-inspired architecture, cool climate, and snowy winters. Its appearance is a surprising contrast to the Sahara you experienced only a day earlier.

From Ifrane, we continue toward Fes. By the time you arrive, you will have crossed mountains, valleys, oasis landscapes, and the Sahara — making the journey from Marrakech to Fes much more than simply traveling between two cities.

Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation or Fes airport, marking the end of your 5 days tour from Marrakech to Fes.

    Driving time: Approximately 7 hours
    End of tour: Fes
